Should Christians Eat Halal Meat?

Posted on Updated on

Military Videos of the World – Should Christians Eat Halal Meat?.

Christians often ask me if they should eat halal meat (i.e., meat from animals that have been slaughtered in accordance with Islamic practice). Even in Western nations, meat at local markets is frequently “halal certified,” and not all packagers bother to label it as halal. Further, many Christians enjoy sharing meals with their Muslim friends, so dietary concerns may arise.

One may object to halal meat for a variety of reasons (e.g., the methods of slaughter that are employed, the serving of such meats to school children who don’t get a choice as to what their school serves for lunch, the Islamization of the meat industry, etc.). However, the question about Christians eating halal meat is usually based on a passage in 1 Corinthians 10. Muslims pronounce Islamic phrases (bismillah, “in the name of Allah,” and Allahu akbar, “Allah is greater”) over animals as they are slaughtered, so many Christians wonder if eating the meat of these animals is condemned by the Apostle Paul. Here’s the first part of the relevant passage:

1 Corinthians 10:14-22—Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. I speak as to wise men; you judge what I say. Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ? Is not the bread which we break a sharing in the body of Christ? Since there is one bread, we who are many are one body; for we all partake of the one bread. Look at the nation Israel; are not those who eat the sacrifices sharers in the altar? What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become sharers in demons. You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? We are not stronger than He, are we?

Notice that Paul is specifically discussing meals that function as part of worship. He refers to the “Lord’s Supper,” in which Christians gather for a meal commemorating the sacrificial death of Jesus. He also mentions Jewish sacrifices, in which the person who brings the offering consumes a portion of the sacrifice (as do the priests).

Paul goes on to say that “the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God,” and that Christians “cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.” Does this mean that Christians who eat halal meat are “partaking of the table of Allah,” so to speak? Let’s keep reading, because Paul clarifies the issue for us.

1 Corinthians 10:23-31—All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor. Eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake; for the earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains. If one of the unbelievers invites you and you want to go, eat anything that is set before you without asking questions for conscience’ sake. But if anyone says to you, “This is meat sacrificed to idols,” do not eat it, for the sake of the one who informed you, and for conscience’ sake; I mean not your own conscience, but the other man’s; for why is my freedom judged by another’s conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I slandered concerning that for which I give thanks? Whether, then, you eat or drink or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Since Paul advises Christians to “eat anything that is sold in the meat market without asking questions for conscience’ sake,” he obviously doesn’t care whether the animal has been slaughtered in the name of a false deity. He even says that it’s perfectly acceptable to join a pagan for a meal, knowing that the meat may have been slaughtered as a sacrifice to a pagan deity.

Paul’s concern is when the meal is eaten as part of worship, and the impact this may have on new or weak Christians who have been raised to think of the idols as objects of worship. Indeed, Paul’s remark about the “table of demons” is connected to chapter 8, where he refers to “dining in an idol’s temple” (1 Corinthians 8:10). Such meals were part of the worship of idols, and if new or weak Christians see Christians eating in the temples of idols, they may be tempted to join in the worship of the idols.

The situation is quite different at a market or at a private home. Obviously, if I don’t ask questions at the meat market or I don’t ask questions at a person’s home, I can’t be involved in the worship of a false god by consuming meat, because nothing about the deity has been mentioned to me. Yet if a new Christian, who thinks of the meat as part of the worship, tells me that the animal was sacrificed to an idol, he is clearly concerned about the religious connotations of the meal. As such, I cannot eat the meat, because “by sinning against the brethren and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ” (1 Corinthians 8:12).

Applying these principles to the question of halal meat, an important difference becomes apparent. Although Islamic phrases are recited over the animals when they are slaughtered, this isn’t the sort of sacrificial worship Paul discusses in 1 Corinthians. “Halal” simply means “allowed” or “permissible,” not “sacred.” Halal meat has met basic requirements for being consumed by Muslims. This doesn’t mean it was prepared as part of Islamic worship.

But even if we view halal meat as somehow sacrificed to Allah, this shouldn’t be a concern, because the god of the Qur’an, like the idols of Corinth, is nothing. Hence, Christians should have no religious objection to eating halal meat, whether in a store, at a restaurant, or at the home of a Muslim friend. The only exception would be if we are in the presence of Christians who are sincerely bothered by the eating of halal meat, because they think of it as somehow honoring Allah. In such cases, Paul says that we shouldn’t eat the meat (1 Corinthians 8:13).

Again, there may be other concerns about halal meat. One may object to the treatment of the animals or to the application of Sharia principles in Western industries. But if we are wondering whether Paul says that we are sinning by eating halal meat, we can see that his only warnings for us are: (1) Don’t eat halal meat as part of any worship towards Allah, and (2) Don’t eat halal meat if a new or weak Christian is bothered by it. Apart from those cases, the general rule is that “everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer” (1 Timothy 4:4-5).

BOYCOTT SHARIA-COMPLIANT SUBWAY SHOPS, now offering ‘halal-only’ meats in 200 of its UK stores

Military Videos of the World – BOYCOTT SHARIA-COMPLIANT SUBWAY SHOPS, now offering ‘halal-only’ meats in 200 of its UK stores.

BOYCOTT them everywhere else, too. Subway removes ham and bacon from its menu at nearly 200 UK stores and offers halal meat only, prepared under strict barbaric Islamic rules, in order to cater to Muslim demands.

UK Daily Mail (h/t Inexion)  In Arabic the word halal means ‘permitted’ or ‘lawful’ and defines anything that is allowed or lawful according to the Qur’an. It is often used to indicate food – particularly meat – has been prepared in accordance with Muslim principles and techniques.

Muslims are forbidden from eating any non-halal food and meat from pigs and Subway said customers can identify those stores selling halal food by the special ‘All meats are Halal’ sign, which must be displayed in participating branches. In the halal-only branches ham and bacon has been substituted for turkey ham and rashers.

Many animal charities condemn halal slaughter as being cruel to animals. Traditionally in halal abattoirs the throats of the animals are cut while they are fully conscious – an act many campaigners say is inhumane and needlessly cruel.

In non-halal abattoirs, livestock are stunned before killing to prevent any unnecessary suffering. Pre-stunning is not permitted by Islamic scholars. In Britain, killing an animal without prior stunning is illegal, but the law gives special exemption to Muslim meat producers on the grounds of religion.

There are thought to be around 12 halal abattoirs dedicated to unstunned slaughter in the UK, while hundreds practise stunned halal slaughter.  A Subway spokeswoman told MailOnline all halal meat served in the participating branches is from animals who were stunned prior to slaughter. (If that were true, they would not be halal, so Subway is lying)

She said: ‘The growing popularity of the Subway chain with the diverse multicultural population across the UK and Ireland means we have to balance the values of many religious communities with the overall aim of improving the health and welfare standards of animals.

‘We put a programme into place in 2007 to ensure that the population demographic is taken into account when new store openings are considered in order that we meet consumer demand in each location.

All halal meats are certified by the appropriate halal authorities. All halal Subway stores have numerous signs stating that they serve halal food.  These are situated on the menu panels, nutritional information and in the front window of the store.

Animal campaigning charity PETA urged people to opt for a vegetarian diet to ensure they have the best interests of animals at heart. A spokesman said: ‘At the best of times, meat is a product of a bloody and violent industry with no respect for other living beings who value their lives in the same way that we do and experience the same pain and terror that Subways’ customers would if they were killed for a sandwich.

‘Most religions, including Islam, preach kindness to animals, but words are one thing and practice another. Speaking about the general issue of halal slaughter, an RSPCA spokeswoman added: ‘Scientific research has clearly shown that slaughter of an animal without stunning can cause unnecessary suffering, and the RSPCA is opposed to the slaughter of any animal without first making it insensible to pain and distress.

‘Our concern has nothing to do with the expression of religious belief but with the practice of killing by throat cutting without pre-stunning. ‘We believe that meat produced from animals stunned or not stunned before slaughter should be clearly labelled to allow consumer choice, and continue to press for changes in the law that would improve the welfare of all farm animals at the time of slaughter.’

Military Videos of the World – After huge election gains, Front National removed halal options in schools, now it is banning halal choices in municipal cafeterias.

A newly elected conservative mayor in a town in southern France has vowed that no municipally-run cafeterias will serve halal meals, adding fuel to a growing controversy in the wake of the National Front’s unprecedented success in last month’s local elections.

The Local (h/t Maria J)  One of the new mayors who swept into power two weeks ago after historic local elections has wasted no time in stoking controversy by stating that no halal meals will be served in municipal cafeterias in his town of Béziers.

The mayor Robert Ménard, whose campaign was backed by Marine Le Pen and her National Front party told RTL radio any town establishments that serve halal will cease to do so immediately.

“You must always give people the choice to avoid eating foods that they don’t want to or cannot eat due to their religious convictions. That said, there will be no halal meals in municipal cafeterias,” Ménard said.

RTL noted that there is no official data available on which schools in Beziers, if any, serve halal meat to students who dine in the cafeterias.

Ménard’s comments come just days after National Front party leader Marine Le Pen told RTL radio the nearly dozen French cities captured by her party would not allow “religious requirements” to dictate the composition of school lunches.

Le Pen told a French radio station that in towns won by the party’s candidates school cafeterias will no longer serve non-pork substitution meals, which generally go to Muslim children.

School meals is the first issue the National Front has flexed its newly strengthened political muscles on since winning a record number of town council seats and mayorships in March’s local elections. eat-pork-or-bring-your-own-lunch-advises-marine-le-pens-front-national-party-as-she-orders-school-cafeterias-to-stop-offering-religiously-based-alternatives-just-for-muslims

UK: KFC customer told: “You can’t have bacon here, we’re ‘halal’-compliant”

Military Videos of the World – UK: KFC customer told: “You can’t have bacon here, we’re ‘halal’-compliant”.

A customer was left fuming after a KFC restaurant took his favorite meal off the menu because it breached their new halal regulations. Alan Phillips was told he would have to travel five miles to another branch if he wanted the Big Daddy, a chicken burger, topped with bacon, cheese and salad.

UK Daily Mail  The branch, in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, is one of 86 KFC restaurants which is running trials of a scheme where they sell nothing other than halal meat.

The company has taken the burger off the menu because Islamic dietary law forbids Muslims to eat anything which has been prepared on the same premises as pork, which is itself strictly forbidden.

It said it was responding to ‘increased demand’ for a halal menu in the areas of Britain with growing Muslim populations.

Mr Phillips said he found the change ‘extremely unfair’ on non-Muslim customers. ‘I can’t believe a chain like this has taken this stance,’ he said. ‘Staff told me that due to the dietary laws halal meat could not be prepared in the same place as other meats, so I couldn’t have my bacon.  It was like they were saying I couldn’t buy bacon because it might offend people.’

Mr Phillips was told he would have to travel to another KFC five miles away to buy his bacon burger. He protested that this was too far for him to travel.

‘It is getting silly,’ he said. ‘I have many friends who are black, white and Muslim but they wouldn’t be forced to eat non-halal meat. ‘I have no problem with them selling halal meat, but I would like the choice.’

Traditionally, halal meat must be slaughtered by hand, although KFC, which has more than 750 restaurants in the UK, said its chickens are not killed in this way.  The meat must also be blessed in the name of Allah and cannot be kept on the same premises as banned substances including pork and alcohol.

KFC spokesman Nina Arnott said the halal trial was expected to last ‘a few months’. She said: ‘We’ve responded to requests to provide halal food in some parts of the UK and the Middleway Park restaurant in Burton is one of the restaurants taking part in our trial.

‘The Big Daddy is the only product we’ve taken off the menu at our trial stores and we’re using exactly the same ingredients and exactly the same tasting chicken as before.’

Military Videos of the World – Understanding Halal Certification Schemes.

Please note this is not about halal food Q Societys spokesman Andrew Horwood points out Halal food itself is not of concern. Nearly all our food is naturally permissible to Muslims and observant Muslims can make food of unknown origin halal by proclaiming ismillah over the food before eating. What is of concern are the recently invented certification schemes designed to permeate the supply chain from feeding trough to super market shelves and restaurant kitchens including many nonfood goods and services. According to meat industry groups and research two thirds of chicken and la..
