A customer was left fuming after a KFC restaurant took his favorite meal off the menu because it breached their new halal regulations. Alan Phillips was told he would have to travel five miles to another branch if he wanted the Big Daddy, a chicken burger, topped with bacon, cheese and salad.
UK Daily Mail The branch, in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, is one of 86 KFC restaurants which is running trials of a scheme where they sell nothing other than halal meat.
The company has taken the burger off the menu because Islamic dietary law forbids Muslims to eat anything which has been prepared on the same premises as pork, which is itself strictly forbidden.
It said it was responding to ‘increased demand’ for a halal menu in the areas of Britain with growing Muslim populations.
Mr Phillips said he found the change ‘extremely unfair’ on non-Muslim customers. ‘I can’t believe a chain like this has taken this stance,’ he said. ‘Staff told me that due to the dietary laws halal meat could not be prepared in the same place as other meats, so I couldn’t have my bacon. It was like they were saying I couldn’t buy bacon because it might offend people.’
Mr Phillips was told he would have to travel to another KFC five miles away to buy his bacon burger. He protested that this was too far for him to travel.
‘It is getting silly,’ he said. ‘I have many friends who are black, white and Muslim but they wouldn’t be forced to eat non-halal meat. ‘I have no problem with them selling halal meat, but I would like the choice.’
Traditionally, halal meat must be slaughtered by hand, although KFC, which has more than 750 restaurants in the UK, said its chickens are not killed in this way. The meat must also be blessed in the name of Allah and cannot be kept on the same premises as banned substances including pork and alcohol.
KFC spokesman Nina Arnott said the halal trial was expected to last ‘a few months’. She said: ‘We’ve responded to requests to provide halal food in some parts of the UK and the Middleway Park restaurant in Burton is one of the restaurants taking part in our trial.
‘The Big Daddy is the only product we’ve taken off the menu at our trial stores and we’re using exactly the same ingredients and exactly the same tasting chicken as before.’
It was like a scene out of a horror movie, as a 17-year old teenage jihadi left his 10-year-old sister lying in the street drenched in blood, after he launched a savage knife attack on his mother and two sisters, leaving all three with multiple serious wounds.
UK Daily Mail A neighbor, who claimed to have seen part of the attack on his CCTV system, watched as one girl, just 10 years old, was dragged in a headlock into the street and stabbed multiple times in the upper body and neck. She then tried to crawl to a neighbour’s house for help, he said.
A teaching assistant and caretaker from the primary school across the road from the house raced to help the little girl as she lay in agony. Her older brother, aged 17, calmly stood and watched nearby before being taken away by police, witnesses said. The mother, one claimed, was stabbed in the eye.
The 10-year-old was airlifted to hospital where her injuries were described by police as ‘serious’ while her 16-year-old sister and their mother were taken to hospital by ambulance. Police were called to an address in Little Green Lane at 7.20am on Wednesday by a resident who reported hearing screams.
A statement said: ‘Officers arrived at the scene within a matter of minutes and arrested a 17-year-old in the street and recovered a knife nearby. He has been taken to hospital having suffered a minor cut to his hand. ’A woman in her 40s and a teenage girl – believed to be aged 16 – were found inside a house with knife injuries whilst a younger girl, 10, was found on the pavement with stab injuries.’
‘This appears to be a contained, domestic incident: the teenager was arrested outside the address and we are not actively seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.’
The father is working away in Saudi Arabia, so the boy was left as man of the house.

UK Daily Mail(h/t Maria J) An unwitting British soldier who posed for a photograph with a rogue Afghan policeman was shot dead by him seconds later. Corporal Brent McCarthy, 25, is pictured with a member of the Afghan Uniformed Police just moments before the shooting. After the snap was taken the gunman and another accomplice turned their weapons on the RAF policeman.
His comrade Lance Corporal Lee Davies, 27, of the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, who can be seen sitting in the background of the photo, was also shot dead. The pair were unlawfully killed while on active service, a coroner has ruled.
A military inquest heard the pair both died of ‘unsurvivable injuries’ after being shot by close range gunshots. Both soldiers were part of an eight-man team who had gone to the Afghan police base in the Lashkar Gah district of Helmand province on May 12.
The patrol had gone there so British officers could meet local police officials with RAF policeman Cpl McCarthy acting as a specialist adviser. Oxfordshire Coroners Court was told the men had been engaging in ‘banter and general chit chat’ with what they thought were two Afghan Uniformed Police officers.

LCpl Davies, from Barry, South Wales, had remarked that the Afghan pictured had ‘wet himself’ and this may have been a sign as to what was about to happen, the inquest heard.
The Afghan savage pictured was shot dead by a British guardsman as he tried to flee the scene.
Home Office pathologist Dr Russell Delaney said despite efforts to resuscitate the pair ‘there was nothing colleagues, combat medics or medical staff could have done.’
Benjamin Bardsley, the men’s commander at the time, told the inquest at Oxfordshire Coroners Court it was his belief the two Afghans, dressed in police uniforms, had staged an ‘opportunistic’ attack on his men. He described both Cpl McCarthy, an RAF policeman, and L/Cpl Davies, of 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, as ‘phenomenal soldiers’ fully capable of doing the job.
The Army unit was in the area acting as a police advisory team helping train the Afghan police, but had specifically visited the base that day to ask the local commander about a tip-off that one of his colleagues was working with the Taliban.
